Tips for a Smooth Transition
Starting school is a big milestone for children and families. Whether your child is beginning kindergarten or returning for another school year, preparation can help make the transition smoother and more positive.
Visit the School Playground and Read Together
Most school playgrounds are open during the summer. Visiting the playground can help your child get familiar with their school environment and feel more comfortable before the first day. While you’re there, you might have natural opportunities to talk about what happens at school, how they feel about starting, and answer any questions. Reading books about starting school is another great way to prepare. Your local library will have a variety to choose from—look for ones that spark conversation about routines, making friends, and trying new things.
Start Routines Early
A few weeks before school begins, try adjusting morning and bedtime routines to match the school schedule. Wake up at the same time each day, prepare clothes the night before, and give your child chances to use their school backpack or lunch containers. When the first day arrives, let them know what the day will look like, including who will be picking them up. Predictability helps children feel secure.
Stay Positive and Supportive
Children may feel a mix of excitement and nervousness when starting school. Acknowledge and accept their feelings while offering comfort and reassurance. Follow your child’s lead—if they want to talk about school, engage in the conversation. If they seem hesitant, give them space and revisit the topic later. Showing confidence in your child’s ability to start school helps them feel secure and ready.
Learn About Kindergarten
The Ontario Kindergarten Program outlines how the two-year program works, including what skills and learning experiences are part of the journey. Understanding the program can help you support your child at home and set realistic expectations. The program will be updated in September 2025, so you may notice changes over time.
Care for Mind and Body
Good sleep and healthy food are important all year, but especially during the transition to school. A well-rested, well-fed child is better able to focus, learn, and cope with new experiences.
First Day Basics
On the first day, pack indoor shoes (in the backpack), a water bottle, lunch, and extra clothes. Indoor shoes and extra clothes often stay at school. If your child needs comfort, consider sending a small stuffed animal or a family photo. Some families also share a short note with educators about their child’s interests, strengths, and any supports they may need.
Communication with Educators
Sharing information about your child helps educators understand and support them. You can connect by phone, email, or in person, but remember that drop-off and pick-up times can be busy.
Remember: It’s a Journey
Kindergarten is about growth, exploration, and learning—both for your child and for you. It’s okay if everything doesn’t go perfectly right away. With preparation, patience, and positivity, the transition to school can be an exciting step forward.
